Energy Healing

Science, Benefits, and Impact on Well-Being

by Barb Casper

Energy healing, once considered purely spiritual, is increasingly being studied through the lens of science. Known collectively as biofield therapies, practices like Reiki, Healing Touch, and Therapeutic Touch focus on restoring balance to the body’s energy systems. Today, researchers are finding that these approaches may support the body’s natural ability to heal by reducing stress, easing pain, and improving emotional well-being.

What Is Energy Healing?

Energy healing involves gentle touch—or hands held just above the body—to influence the body’s subtle energy field. While its roots can be traced back thousands of years in traditions like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, modern health organizations, including the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), recognize these therapies as legitimate areas of study.
Rather than replacing medical care, energy healing is typically used as a complementary approach to improve quality of life, reduce discomfort, and promote relaxation.

How Does It Work?

The exact mechanisms are still being researched, but several theories help explain how energy healing may influence health:
  • Nervous System Regulation – Sessions often trigger the body’s relaxation response, lowering stress hormones like cortisol and increasing parasympathetic activity, which supports healing.
  • Pain Modulation – Studies suggest energy healing may influence the brain’s pain pathways, reducing discomfort and boosting endorphin release.
  • Mind–Body Connection – The therapeutic presence, intention, and ritual aspects of energy healing may activate placebo and contextual healing responses, which are known to create real physiological changes.
