Natural Health Program Categories
Acupuncture – Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, known as acupoints, to stimulate energy flow or Qi (pronounced “chee”). The goal is to restore balance and promote the body’s natural ability to heal.
Allopathic Medicine – Allopathic medicine, also known as conventional or Western medicine, is a system of healthcare that focuses on diagnosing and treating diseases primarily through the use of drugs, surgery, and other medical interventions. The term is often used to differentiate this approach from alternative or complementary medicine systems, such as homeopathy or naturopathy.
Aromatherapy/Essential Oils
Aromatherapy is a holistic healing practice that uses natural plant extracts, particularly essential oils, to promote physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. These essential oils are extracted from flowers, leaves, stems, roots, or other parts of plants and are believed to harness the plant’s therapeutic properties.
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained through processes like steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. These oils capture the natural scent and beneficial properties of the plant, including its aroma, flavor, and therapeutic compounds.
Ayurveda – An ancient system of natural medicine that originated in India over 3,000 years ago. The term “Ayurveda” comes from the Sanskrit words “Ayur“ (life) and “Veda“ (knowledge), meaning “the science of life.” It is a holistic approach to health and well-being that emphasizes the balance between mind, body, and spirit. The system uses diet, nutrition, herbal medicine, yoga and meditation to restore balance.
Crystals – Crystals, in the context of healing, are naturally occurring minerals believed to possess energetic properties that can support physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Each type of crystal is thought to emit unique vibrations or frequencies that interact with the body’s energy field, or aura, to promote balance, healing, and alignment.
Detoxification – The physiological or medical process of removing toxic substances from the body. It typically involves the liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, and digestive system, which work together to eliminate harmful toxins that accumulate from environmental exposure, diet, or internal metabolic processes. In a broader sense, detoxification can also refer to methods aimed at cleansing the body, such as fasting, dietary adjustments, or holistic practices, and it may be applied metaphorically to describe removing negative influences or harmful habits from one’s life.
Energy Healing – Energy healing is a holistic practice that involves channeling or manipulating energy to promote physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. It is based on the belief that the body has a vital energy field that can become imbalanced or blocked, leading to health issues. Practitioners use various techniques to restore the natural flow of energy, enhance the body’s ability to heal itself, and promote harmony and balance. Energy healing often complements traditional medical treatments and focuses on treating the whole person rather than just symptoms.
Environmental Health – Focus on how the environment—both natural and built—affects human health. It includes the study of factors like air and water quality, food safety, sanitation, climate change, hazardous materials, and exposure to environmental toxins. Environmental health aims to understand how environmental factors contribute to disease and illness and to develop strategies for improving environmental conditions to promote better health outcomes.
Heat Therapy – A therapeutic technique that involves applying heat to the body to provide various health benefits. It can help relax muscles, improve circulation, reduce pain, and promote healing.
Herbal Medicine – The practice of using plants or plant-derived substances for their therapeutic properties to promote health, prevent illness, or treat various conditions. It is one of the oldest forms of medicine, rooted in traditional practices across cultures, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ayurveda, and Indigenous healing systems.
Holistic Wellness – Holistic wellness is an approach to health and well-being that considers the whole person—body, mind, emotions, and spirit—as interconnected. It emphasizes balance and harmony across all aspects of life and encourages practices that promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Rather than focusing solely on treating symptoms, holistic wellness seeks to address the root causes of imbalance and supports overall well-being through lifestyle choices, mindfulness, nutrition, exercise, stress management, and self-care practices. It promotes the idea that true wellness is achieved when all aspects of a person’s life are aligned and nurtured.
Homeopathy – Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine based on the principle of “like cures like.” It involves using highly diluted substances—often plant, mineral, or animal-based—that, in larger amounts, would produce symptoms similar to those of the illness being treated. Homeopaths believe that these diluted substances stimulate the body’s vital force or healing energy to restore balance and health. The remedies are individualized, meaning they are tailored to a person’s specific symptoms, physical condition, and emotional state.
Hydrotherapy – A therapeutic treatment that uses water, in various forms and temperatures, to promote healing and improve physical and mental health. It can involve techniques such as baths, saunas, steam, hot and cold compresses, and water exercises. Hydrotherapy is often used to relieve pain, improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation.
Immunity
Natural immunity, also known as innate or acquired immunity, is the body’s inherent ability to defend itself against infections and diseases. It is developed through exposure to pathogens (such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi) and involves the immune system recognizing and remembering these pathogens.
Acquired Immunity – Maintaining a healthy lifestyle—through proper nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and hydration—supports these natural defenses, helping the immune system function optimally.
Massage Therapy – Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that involves the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, and ligaments, to promote relaxation, reduce tension, and improve overall health.
Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation is a practice in which an individual uses a technique—such as focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity— to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.
Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to the present moment in a non-judgmental and accepting way. It involves observing thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations with awareness and acceptance, typically cultivated through practices like meditation, but can also be applied to everyday activities.
Mind-Body Connection – refers to the relationship between a person’s thoughts, emotions, and physical health. It suggests that mental and emotional states can influence physical health and well-being, while physical health can also affect one’s mental state. The mind and body are seen as deeply interconnected.
Naturopathy – a system of alternative medicine that emphasizes natural remedies and the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. Naturopathic practitioners use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including herbal medicine, nutrition, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and physical manipulation, to support health and prevent illness. The philosophy behind naturopathy is to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—rather than just addressing specific symptoms, and to promote overall well-being through natural means.
Nutrition (Holistic) – An approach to eating that emphasizes the importance of whole, nutrient-dense foods and their role in achieving overall health and well-being. It views food as more than just a means of sustenance, focusing on how nutrition affects the entire body—mind, body, and spirit. Holistic nutrition considers the individual’s unique needs, lifestyle, and environment, encouraging balanced, natural diets that support the body’s ability to heal, thrive, and maintain optimal function. This approach often includes a focus on organic, minimally processed foods, proper digestion, and the integration of physical, mental, and emotional health.
Outdoor Therapy/Nature Therapy – A therapeutic approach that involves spending time in natural environments to promote mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It leverages the healing properties of nature, such as fresh air, green spaces, and natural landscapes, to help individuals reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall health. Both integrate principles from both traditional therapy and ecotherapy, focusing on the connection between humans and the natural world as a path to healing.
Probiotics and Gut Health
Probiotics are live microorganisms, typically bacteria or yeast, that provide health benefits when consumed in adequate amounts. Often referred to as “good” or “friendly” bacteria, probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of gut microbiota (the community of microorganisms in the digestive system), support digestion, boost immune function, and may improve overall health. They are commonly found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and in dietary supplements.
Gut health refers to the well-being of the gastrointestinal (GI) system, particularly the balance and function of the gut microbiota. A healthy gut is essential for effective digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. It also plays a significant role in mental health, mood regulation, and inflammation levels. Maintaining gut health involves a balanced diet, proper hydration, regular physical activity, and sometimes the use of probiotics to support the diversity and function of gut bacteria.
Shamanism – A spiritual practice and worldview that involves connecting with the spiritual realm to gain insight, healing, and guidance. Shamans are believed to be intermediaries between the physical world and the spirit world, using rituals, drumming, meditation, and altered states of consciousness to communicate with spirits, ancestors, and nature. It typically involves healing work and divination to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Supplements and Vitamins
Supplements are products that are taken orally to provide nutrients that may be missing or insufficient in a person’s diet. They can come in various forms, including pills, capsules, powders, and liquids, and may contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, or other botanicals. Supplements are intended to support overall health, fill nutritional gaps, and sometimes address specific health concerns, but they are not meant to replace a balanced diet.
Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition. They are required in small amounts to maintain various bodily functions, including immune support, energy production, and cell growth. Since the body cannot produce most vitamins, they must be obtained through food or supplements. Examples include Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) – A comprehensive system of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years in China. It is based on the concept of balancing the body’s vital energy, known as Qi (Chi), and maintaining harmony between the body, mind, and environment. TCM emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body’s systems, viewing health as a state of balance, and illness as a result of imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi. It also incorporates the principles of Yin and Yang (opposing forces that create balance) and the Five Elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) to explain the functioning of the body and the environment.
Yoga, QiGong, and Tai Chi
Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in ancient India. It involves a combination of breath control, meditation, and physical postures (asanas) to promote physical health, mental clarity, emotional well-being, and spiritual growth. Yoga emphasizes the connection between the mind, body, and spirit, and can be practiced in various styles, from gentle and restorative practices to more vigorous ones like Ashtanga or Vinyasa. It aims to bring balance, flexibility, strength, and inner peace.
QiGong (also spelled Chi Kung) is a Chinese practice that combines movement, meditation, and controlled breathing to cultivate and balance Qi (vital energy) within the body. QiGong is used to improve health, increase energy, reduce stress, and promote longevity. It involves slow, deliberate movements, postures, and breathing exercises, and is often used as a complementary practice to other forms of traditional Chinese medicine, like acupuncture and herbal therapy.
Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that involves slow, flowing movements and deep breathing exercises, often described as “meditation in motion.” It is practiced for its health benefits, including stress reduction, improved balance, flexibility, and overall vitality. Although Tai Chi originated as a martial art, it is now commonly practiced as a form of exercise and mind-body relaxation. Like QiGong, Tai Chi focuses on the flow and cultivation of Qi throughout the body.
